About

Built to turn intent into implementation.

Toyota Empowerment Trust is a non-profit platform focused on practical ESG outcomes in communities and across the supplier ecosystem surrounding Toyota.

Who we are

Toyota Empowerment Trust was established in 2016 as an enterprise and supplier development vehicle.

Its first mandate focused on Enterprise and Supplier Development.

That work demonstrated the value of a dedicated vehicle capable of taking a strategic objective and turning it into an operating programme, business or funded intervention.

That mandate has since broadened, and the Trust now works across:

  • community STEM and talent development;
  • supplier decarbonisation and clean energy; and
  • supplier scale-up capability.

What the Trust is for

  • 01
    Our purpose

To turn selected Toyota South Africa Motors ESG priorities into measurable outcomes in the communities and supplier ecosystem surrounding Toyota.

  • 02
    Vision

Thriving communities and responsible, future-fit suppliers contributing to a stronger and more sustainable Toyota ecosystem in South Africa.

  • 03
    Mission

To design, fund, implement and measure high-impact programmes that strengthen STEM talent in Toyota’s surrounding communities, accelerate clean-energy adoption among suppliers, and build the governance and data capability emerging businesses need to grow responsibly.

One of the ways Toyota implements ESG

Toyota South Africa Motors has a broad ESG agenda extending across its own business and wider stakeholder ecosystem.

Toyota Empowerment Trust is one implementation platform within that broader strategy.

TET works with TSAM on selected initiatives suited to focused external delivery.

Toyota retains responsibility for its overall ESG strategy, corporate reporting, recruitment, procurement and other internal business decisions.

TET focuses on implementation.

How we work

The same sequence for every intervention, whichever pillar it belongs to. It is the sequence rather than the subject matter that makes the platform reusable.

  1. Start with the problem

Every intervention should address a defined community, talent or supplier challenge.

  2. Define the outcome

Success measures are established before implementation.

  3. Build the model

TET brings together the funding, programme and specialist capability required.

  4. Implement

Delivery is coordinated through dedicated operating capability and specialist partners.

  5. Govern

Programme decisions, budgets, evidence and progress are managed through structured oversight.

  6. Measure

Performance focuses on outcomes as well as activity.

  7. Improve and scale

Interventions that work can be refined and expanded.

One impact platform. Commercial capability underneath it.

Toyota Empowerment Trust sets the impact direction and provides the non-profit platform. Inqubeko provides specialist commercial delivery capability through three for-profit operating ventures.

  • Toyota Empowerment Trust

    Non-profit impact platform

  • Inqubeko

    Market-neutral commercial delivery brand

  • Three specialist for-profit operating ventures

Delivering programmes and services aligned to the Trust’s impact objectives

TET protects the impact mandate

The Trust provides the non-profit platform through which long-term ESG objectives can be governed.

Inqubeko builds specialist delivery capability

The commercial entities operate under a market-neutral brand, allowing specialist teams and products to compete, develop expertise and build delivery capability beyond the confines of a single programme.

TET defines and governs impact.
Inqubeko helps deliver it.

Where aligned third-party work is undertaken through Inqubeko, it can strengthen the delivery capability, scale and sustainability available to the broader platform.

Our first decade

2016–2026

The original TET model created a foundation across:

  • black-owned business development
  • education
  • talent pipelines
  • supplier programmes
  • governance
  • renewable-energy funding
  • impact measurement

The next chapter builds on that capability rather than starting again.

Governance

Toyota Empowerment Trust is governed through defined mandates, documented decision-making, financial controls and outcome reporting.

Our guiding principle is simple:

Clear mandate. Clear accountability. Clear evidence of delivery.

Recognised for impact.

In 2026, the training business operating within the wider TET ecosystem was named a finalist in three categories at the Nedbank Top Empowerment Awards:

  • Socio-Economic Development of the Year
  • Education and Skills Development of the Year
  • Youth Development of the Year
